Button Clubs of NYS Picnic — September 24, 2026

The 2026 Button Clubs of NYS Picnic brought together 28 enthusiastic NYSBS members for a lively and welcoming day of food, fellowship, and button fun. Previously known as the Western NY Button Picnic, the event was renamed this year to reflect its expanded invitation to all New York State clubs. The date was also moved from June to September this year to avoid being to close to when the National Show was scheduled at the end of July.

Hosted for the first time by the Finger Lakes Button Club, the picnic was warm, friendly, and beautifully organized. Clubs in attendance, besides Finger Lakes, included Elmira, Genesee, and Rochester. A special thank-you goes to President Cathy Parke and her members, whose hospitality set the tone for a relaxed, fun gathering at the Preble Congregational Church.

The day featured raffle baskets, themed centerpieces, creative China‑button entries, and tables where members sold buttons and shared stories. Guests enjoyed Bob’s Barbecue and supported the Preble Church food pantry with canned donations. Everyone who attended received a favor card with China buttons made by Kathy Doody, and three people at each table were lucky enough to receive the centerpieces – a China teacup candle and matching plate on top of a doily embellished with China buttons – all made by Beverly Hesse.

A highlight of the event was Jody Behrbaum’s presentation, “Researching Buttons: A China Button Case Study.” Jody demonstrated how collectors can uncover the history behind their treasures using original button cards, patents, manufacturer archives, historical documents, and even artifacts recovered from shipwrecks. She also explained how she has created a database to keep her research well organized. Her talk encouraged attendees to look beyond traditional references and embrace the detective work that makes button collecting endlessly rewarding. An interesting fact Jody shared is that she collects only China buttons! We all found that fascinating.

It was a warm, lively, and memorable statewide gathering — a wonderful celebration of New York’s button community.
